What is Cured-in-Place Pipe?


Over the past several decades, cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) has emerged as one of the most widely used trenchless technologies for rehabilitation of existing sewer pipes without the cost and disruption of excavation. CIPP involves inserting a resin-impregnated felt tube into an existing pipe using winches and pull cables. The tube is then expanded to fit tightly against the existing pipe walls and cured using hot water or steam. This leaves a new pipe-within-a-pipe that is structurally sound for decades to come.

The CIPP Process


The basic steps in the CIPP process are straightforward:

Inspection - CCTV cameras are used to inspect the interior of the existing pipe and identify any defects or blockages that need to be addressed before installation. This helps determine the appropriate liner dimensions.

Cleaning and Preparation - The existing pipe is cleaned using high-pressure water jets to remove debris, roots, grease deposits and other obstructions from the interior surface. This ensures a tight bond between the new liner and existing pipe.

Impregnation - The liner tube, made of felt or other flexible material, is impregnated with a thermosetting resin. It is important that the resin thoroughly saturates the liner to achieve maximum structural strength once cured.

Insertion - The resin-saturated liner is loaded into an inversion system and pulled or winched through the existing pipe using cables attached to its leading edge. Air bags may be used to invert large diameter liners.

Inflation and Curing - After the liner tube is fully installed, it is expanded using air pressure to tightly fit against the existing pipe wall. Hot water or steam is then circulated inside the liner to cure the resin into a rigid new pipe.

Trimming and Finishing - The cured liner is trimmed at the access points and the service lines reconnected. Internal grouting may be used to form a smooth finish.

Some of the key advantages of the cured-in-place pipe lining method include:

- Minimal excavation required. Since lining is inserted from existing access points like manholes, the need for digging up streets and yards is eliminated, reducing disruption.

- Structural improvement. The Cured-in-place pipe (CIPP)  liner becomes an entirely new, structurally sound pipe able to last 50-100 years. It can increase structural strength up to four times that of concrete or PVC pipes.

- Tight fit. The cured liner conforms to any minor irregularities in the existing pipe wall for a seamless watertight connection without leakage.

- Cost effectiveness. CIPP lining is often the most affordable solution, around half the cost of open-cut replacement in many cases. Savings are maximized with no pavement or land restoration required.

- Quick installation. Once preparations are made, liner insertion and curing can typically be completed within a day for a pipe section. Multiple crews allow large projects to be finished quickly.

- Minimal environmental impact. There is no need to haul away old pipe materials since they become the form for the new liner. Water usage and disturbance of soil/waterways is lower than open-cut methods.

Choosing the Right CIPP Material


While felt has been the traditional material for CIPP liners, there are various resin and felt combinations available today to suit different pipe conditions:

- Felt/Polyester Felt - Durable all-purpose material that is flexible during installation and provides good post-cure strength. Often used for sewer repairs up to 21 inches in diameter.

- Glass Felt - Woven fiberglass liner enhances dimensional stability, stiffness and strain resistance. Recommended for larger sewer pipes subject to significant hydraulic pressures and loads.

- Non-Woven - Randomly oriented fibers form a non-woven felt tube. Softer material that is easy to install but has less rigidity, suitable for smaller diameter pipes.

- PE Felt - Polyethylene felt liner offers chemical resistance and can withstand higher temperatures/pressures than other materials. Common choice for water/pressure pipe applications.

Proper installation is critical for CIPP liners to achieve their designed service life. Installers should implement quality control measures such as:

- Having qualified personnel oversee all steps of the process from inspection to finishing.

- Verification of liner dimensions matched to pipe condition and needs prior to insertion.

- Real-time monitoring to ensure proper resin saturation during wet-out.

- Use of database software to track project details and ensure compliance to specifications.

- Post-cure testing like water infiltration and cure sampling to verify product passed internal QA/QC standards.

- Issuance of warranty/certification upon satisfactory completion of lining project.
